About the Book

The Longer Road: A Story of Family, Shame, and Recovery is the story of Kojo, a young boy growing up in a family slowly being changed by his father’s struggle with alcohol.

When his father loses his job and begins drinking, Kojo starts to carry the weight of problems he does not fully understand. At school, people begin to call him names because of his father’s struggles. At home, he watches his mother become exhausted and his little sister, Ama, become afraid. Slowly, Kojo begins to lose himself. He becomes angry, distant, and drawn toward boys and choices that could take him down the same road as his father.

But Kojo is not alone.

A teacher sees that he is not a bad child, but a hurting one. His sister refuses to stop asking the questions he does not want to answer. His mother begins to understand that she cannot keep carrying everyone by herself. And his father, despite his own failures, begins the difficult work of facing the truth.

Kojo soon discovers that recovery is not something one person can do alone. It takes honesty, courage, forgiveness, support, and many small steps. There are setbacks. There are days when the old road calls him back. But there are also moments of laughter, hope, and small victories that remind him that his family’s story does not have to end where its pain began.

The Longer Road is a deeply human story about childhood, family, addiction, shame, identity, and the possibility of finding your way home. At its heart is a simple message: the road to healing may be long, but every honest step forward matters.
